Writer's pictureKimberly Douglas

**This is one of my older pieces. I decided to include some of my old work in this portfolio to show my growth, progress, and range as a writer. Despite being written years ago, I think this piece really showcases my ability to use poetic devices to my advantage. Don't sleep on the old me, younger Kimberly had just as much potential, only with less experience. I also never used to title my pieces back then, hence the lack of title here. Please enjoy the poem.

Ladies, do not cry. You do not need to put a standard of 'perfect' in your

mind. You do not need to change who you are for the sake of the worlds eyes. They will

treat you like expired milk as they try to label you and stack you on a shelf of lies.

Do not feel as if you can not compare and keep up with the times; you were made to be

unique in your own light and shine. You are fine, like elegantly aged wine in the glass

of beauty. Your beauty must be beheld in small swirls and slow sips in order to fully

appreciate your loveliness. Your eyes hold twinkles of diamonds and gold to reflect the

strength and grace put into your creation. You are irreplaceable; a breaker of

societies standards in today's time. An angel, a princess, a blessing in disguise.

Personal favourite lines:

"They will treat you like expired milk as they try to label you and stack you on a shelf of lies."

"Your beauty must be beheld in small swirls and slow sips in order to fully

appreciate your loveliness."

"You are irreplaceable; a breaker of societies standards in today's time."
